가을에 단풍이 드는 원리는 기온이 내려감에 따라  
잎의 엽록소가 많이 파괴되어 녹색이 줄어들고  
황색 또는 주황색 색소인 크산토필과 카로틴이  
드러나기 때문입니다.

기온이 내려감에 따라 잎에서 합성된 당분이 
제대로 이동하지 못하고 잎에 그대로 남아 있다가 
붉은색 안토시안으로 변하게 되므로 단풍의 
아름다운 색상을 나타내게 되는 것입니다.

 

 

단풍의 다섯가지 색상은?
붉은색(안토시아닌 색소), 노란색(카로틴 색소), 
갈색(타닌 색소)으로 크게 3가지로 나눌 수 있는데, 
이밖에 주황색(크산토필 색소)과 초록색(엽록소 색소)을 
합하여 오색이라고 생각하고 있습니다. 

 

 

여기서 초록색은 주변에 단풍이 들때 
초록색을 띠고 있는 소나무, 전나무 등이 함께 
어울려 색상을 나타내기 때문에 단풍철에 다섯가지 
색상을 볼수 있기 때문으로 오색단풍이라고 봅니다. 

 

 

단풍이 드는 이유는 결국 색소에 의한 것입니다.
기온의 차이, 계절의 영향을 받는 것입니다.
기온이 내려가는 가을이 되면 공기가 건조해지는데

광합성으로 생성된 당류가 줄기와 뿌리로 운반되는 것을
방해해 잎에 쌓이게 합니다.

 

 

이 당류가 잎에서 분해되면서 빨간 색소인 
안토시아닌이 만들어져 세포액에 저장됨으로써 
타는 것 같은 붉은색을 띠는 것이라고 합니다.

 

 

활엽수와 침엽수중 보통 활엽수가 단풍이 든답니다.
